Some people say work/life balance is a mythical unicorn, never achievable. Since I call my site A Life in Balance, I’m not one of those.
I think you can find balance in your life. I think moms NEED to find balance in their lives.
Not just for their kids, but also for themselves. Having balanced life affects our health which in turn affects our relationships, especially with those closest to us – our kids and our husbands.
Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.
What Does Balance Look Like?
Your balance is going to look a lot different than mine. You may have 2 kids. I have 5. You may be working full time outside the home. I’m working almost full time inside my home. You may be a single mom; I’m married to my only husband for almost 21 years.
Yet, we’ll both feel the same and act the same when our lives are in balance.
- We’ll stay healthy.
- We’ll feel relaxed.
- We’ll feel flexible.
- We won’t feel guilty, stressed, chronically fatigued, or overweight.
Where Do We Start to Create Balance in Our Lives?
Unfortunately, the answer to creating balance in your life is going to be very personal. For me, saying no and staying healthy are the framework for the rest of my life.
Maybe you need to start taking care of yourself physically – going to bed at a regular, reasonable time, drinking lots of water, eating fruits, vegetables, and proteins, getting in 30 minutes of exercise daily.
Maybe you need to deal with emotional issues that are feeding your poor health right now by seeing a counselor, talking to the source of the issue, or even leaving the person causing the issue.
Maybe you need to find a local group that deals with addictions for yourself or to deal with a loved one’s addiction.
Maybe you need to start saying No to new opportunities and focus on what’s already in your life.
Maybe you need to go on retreat and spend some time thinking about your life, what needs changing, and where do you want to go.
Maybe you need to hire a professional organizer to help you set up systems in your home to handle homekeeping, storage, and children’s items. Maybe you need to get rid of stuff.
Find a Focus for Your Journey to Balance
Humans are visual. Over 17,000 years ago, cavemen drew pictures on the walls of caves in Lascaux, France depicting possible themselves, the animals they encountered, and abstract signs. Some scientists are now speculating these images are spiritual in nature. Just like the images of the Stations of the Cross found on the walls of my church, these early humans drew pictures to reference and reinforce something that happened.
They drew pictures to help them remember. To take them back to the event and the feelings.
