This post is part of a series based on Laine’s Home Economics: 50 Ways We Paid Off Our House on One Income. Previous posts in the series are listed on my Budget page. Laine is a Christian woman living with her family in California and living off one income. I first started following her via an email list about 7 or 8 years ago.
One of my goals for 2012 is running a 5k in April with my sister-in-law Lisa. Of course, winter is not the best time to start running, but I’m determined to do it. Fortunately, I can use what I already have to make my goal happen.
Quite a few years ago, my mother-in-law gave me the treadmill she was no longer using. I used the treadmill for several years during the winter, and then quit when I was pregnant with my last child. I would occasionally use the treadmill for walking, but honestly, it simply sat in the basement gathering dust. Now I’ve put the treadmill back to work while I run 3 times a week on it.
Now it would be great to listen to a CD while I run on the treadmill. I have 2 great homemade CD’s I made for running. Unfortunately, the CD player in the basement won’t read the CDs. I can listen to the radio. 7 minutes of commercials are a bit annoying, but I’m going to suck it up and use what I have.
On the days that I am running, I am using my T-Tapp Basic Workout Plus dvd that I bought about 2 years ago and only used a handful of times. T-Tapp Basic Workout Plus is a combination of Pilates type stretching for the upper body while strengthening the lower body with different stances. T-Tapp is great for someone with a small room because it doesn’t require a lot of space.
On the days I am walking outside (because I don’t want to spend money on electricity for the treadmill!), I bought the Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred dvd and a set of 5 lb. weights at Target for about $25 to $30. Yes, I did spend money on fitness! However, 30 Day Shred is another great workout for a small space. With 3 different levels of difficulty, each workout consists of 3 circuits of strength, cardio and abs. I am so glad I bought the lighter weights because I couldn’t have done the strength part with 8 lb. weights.
Once I’ve worked my way through the 3 levels of difficulty in the Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred, I’m going to ask my sister-in-law Lisa if she wants to swap fitness dvds. Swapping will give us both new workouts to try as we fight the middle age spread.
Have you ever worked with what you had rather than go buy the solution?
