This winter is wearing me out with the snow, the snow days, the sick days. My 3rd son, my 8 year old, has been absent 8 days this school year, 4 of them this winter. Every single week I feel like I’m coming down with something only to fight it off with echinacea tea and oil of oregano.
We all want warm weather and lots of sunshine.
Selective Neglect
Despite the snow, I’m entering a busy 3 months filled with Girl Scout camporee planning, First Communion party planning, and First Communion Album making. Not to mention a family wedding, a few races, and our regular spring gardening clean up. Whew!
I can’t do it all. I can already tell that I could potentially burn myself out and get really sick. I’m also worried about injuring myself with running. My body is feeling more aches and pains these days.
Enter selective neglect. I’m reconsidering the 10 mile race I signed up for in May. Training right now may be too much for my body. While I would love for us to make all the food for the First Communion party, maybe we’ll order trays again and keep things simple. Rather than clean the rugs after a long, dirty, snowy winter, I’m going to hire my brother-in-law to do it.
I’m going to ask for help with stuff like the Girl Scout camporee. There’s a lot of work to do within our troop to get ready, not to mention the work I’m doing as a camporee committee member. With 3 coleaders, there’s no reason why I need to do all the work.
I planted vegetable and flower seeds in seed trays. If we don’t get the vegetable garden revamped this spring as planned, I have plenty of room in my flower beds for the vegetable plants.
Bringing Springtime into My Home and Ignoring the Calendar
Yesterday, I went shopping for spring decorations. I’ve wanted to have a lighter-colored set of curtains in our kitchen for a long time. The ones we have are about 10 years old. They’ve shrunk over time, too. I found a bark cloth-patterned tablecloth at Target perfect for our kitchen. I’m going to cut the tablecloth down into curtains. I’ll make use of existing seams on the tablecloth to keep my sewing to a minimum.
At Home Goods last week, I found 2 tablecloths for the dining room and kitchen table. One is an April Cornell pattern, and the other is a solid orange-ish pink. Both will bring some color into the 2 rooms. I also decided to treat us to flowers on the dining room table on a regular basis.

A Picture for Thought
My 3rd son’s car came in second at his den’s Pinewood Derby
I love the idea of “selective neglect.” I think you’re very wise to realize that the next few months hold more than you can reasonably expect to do and still be healthy and sane. Choosing which things to “let go” is a great idea.
