If school is open tomorrow (Thursday), my Kindergartener will be bringing cookies for the Valentine Party.
I wasn’t ready to soak the flour for sugar cookies, but I did use organic sugar and white whole wheat flour. I don’t recommend using raw sugar. When I tried that in a sugar cookie dough at Christmas time, the dough “weeped” a bit. It rolled out okay, but the raw sugar did not melt or mix as well as the organic sugar does.
To decorate the cookies, I used egg white mixed with confectioners sugar. I’d love to come up with an alternative for the confectioners sugar – maybe organic sugar ground superfine would work?
Having forgotten to pick up red food coloring, I went with Wilton’s hot pink food coloring. My son wasn’t too happy about the pink, but hot pink is better than nothing.
And of course, because it’s all about the icing, I did my best to decorate with lots of icing.
I used an early twentieth century baking cookbook for inspiration, though my icing should have been a bit stiffer for those fancy loops and whirls.
Since my son pronounced the results as being great, we’re ready for the party. And if there is no party, we’ll feast on iced sugar cookies and hot chocolate and celebrate Notre Dame de Lourdes.
