the blooming view, when it’s not raining

by babhoyersh on May 18, 2011

With so much rain here in the Philly area this week, I needed to share a little sunshine here as a reminder that this too shall pass. Roses and peonies are my favorite flowers, though roses beat peonies by a long shot because of the ants on the peonies. I never bring the peonies inside because who wants to add to the ant population inside the house?

Both of these roses are landscape roses, though the dark pink one is much easier to care for than the light pink one. Both require some pruning in the spring which does take some time, and is worth the time. Usually I don’t spray my roses being a lazy gardener, however, this year I’m trying an Ortho product that I found at Home Depot. Given the amount of rain we’re having this spring, I may see more black spot and other fungal diseases than usual.

I don’t have roses, but I have a peony that is finally going to bloom this year. I bought it on clearance 3 summers ago and I wasn’t sure it was going to make it. I didn’t know about the ant factor though. We have more ants this year than normal.

I live in PA too…close to Harrisburg.

I don’t know why the ants like the peonies. They’re not doing anything to them. It’s very strange. I’d love to bring the blooms inside, but I don’t need any more ants inside! I think the inside ant issues are because of all the rain we’ve had. They’re probably looking for dry land. LOL
