The peeling paint is pretty easy to take care of. It doesn’t have to be a perfect job since we’ll be residing the garage in a few years and replacing the window and surrounding wood frame. However, I was concerned about the brittleness of the caulk holding the panes in place. About half of the caulk is gone, and the rest started coming off while I was scraping the paint.
My plan is to scrape off the loose pieces of paint by the weekend. Then I’ll re-caulk the window to keep the panes from falling out. Next week, I’ll prime and paint the window. Then I’ll tackle the hideous black stuff hanging over the window.
I’m also going to measure the window for a new one, and put the measurements in a notebook I keep in my purse. At some point during the year, our local Home Depot has windows and other items on clearance. If my measurements match, we can save money on a new window.
