I’m in the mood for redecorating our home, albeit frugally. I have 10 projects to work on around the house which I am slowly working on despite being incredibly busy. Breaking the projects down into really small steps helps me feel like I’m making progress until I have more time to tackle the bigger steps like repainting our bedroom.
Breaking the projects down into smaller steps is good for the budget, too. I don’t have $500 to drop all at once on a room renovation. I can spend $20 at Ikea picking up pillows and covers on clearance for 2 bedrooms. I can switch stuff around to redecorate a room and spend the money elsewhere, something I did in the living room this week.
This was the current rug, purchased at Walmart several years ago for about $80. It never really was my style though the price was right. I decided to update the rug in this room to give it some pop since I like the rest of the room. I knew I would need to do something about the curtains which I made and were now faded from the sun.
While at Ikea with friends about a month ago, I found this striped pillow case and thought it would bring the punch of color into the room I wanted. It did though I realized later these colors aren’t in the color palette I always fall back on. I’m going to use these in my daughter’s bedroom; she loves bright colors and stripes. I think these striped pillow covers were under $10 at Ikea. The green one and blue one underneath were in the clearance section at Ikea. Both were only a few dollars.
This is where I ended up on Sunday. I found the new rug at Home Depot by chance. It has the strong graphic design that I love while still catering to the traditional taste of my husband. I went with a darker background since this rug is in a small room, and I won’t be putting anything on top for awhile. The rug was $117, slightly higher than I had planned though I think getting the right rug is just as important as the budget. The kids love the softness of the rug.
The couch and pillow covers are from Ikea. I’ve had the pillow covers for a few years; they have green embroidered bees on them. I love the gardening motif!
Now for the final piece – the curtains! I found these at Pier 1 Imports a few years ago. For awhile I had them in the dining room. On Sunday I realized that I needed slightly darker creamy-colored curtains for the living room. I think these pull the room together, picking up colors from the rug without being overwhelming. I put the faded curtains in the dining room while I look for a new rug for that room.
