Planning on starting meal planning this year to save money, but not sure which meal planner to use? Guess what? You can make your own diy meal planner while you figure out the best meal planning method for your family.
All you need is a notebook, pencil, and a pen. That’s really it.
How to Make a Meal Planner with a Pen and Notebook
After buying 2 Erin Condren Life Planners for managing my family and blogging for 2016, I decided to save money on my meal planner and use supplies I already had squirreled away in my home office closet. Honestly, I really miss my Erin Condren planner, but I promised my husband I would use up my office supplies.
Directions for Creating a Meal Planner
I had an Arc notebook from my Shaklee days complete with tab dividers and lots of blank pages. Since I liked the 2-page weekly spread in my Erin Condren Meal Planner, I adopted the same layout for my diy meal planner. I wrote the days of the week, Monday through Friday on the 2 pages.
At the bottom of the right hand page, I made a section for food prep. In my previous planner, I would note fruits and vegetables that needed to be used up, along with snacks and side dishes to make. Since I’m doing the Whole30 for January, I’ll need to make extra Whole30 compliant dishes to make sure I stay on track with the 30 days.
At the end of the month, I put in pages for my grocery list for each week. I keep a running list for Costco, our favorite produce stand, and Giant. I’ve trained my family to add items to the weekly list as we use them up which saves me having to monitor everything, always a pain in the butt.
Since the Arc planner uses repositional sheets, it’s easy to change things around and take the grocery list out each week. A regular notebook will work just as well, but be a bit messy. You can use this free printable weekly shopping list to organize your shopping.
Yes, you’ll need a pen to set up your planner. Go colorful and have fun! Then, I recommend using a pencil to make your weekly meal plan. If you need to change the plan during the week, it’s much easier and less messy to erase the planned meal and write in a new one.
