The holidays are such a rush, rush, rush time full of activities and things to do. I think one of the hardest times of the year for the feelings of stress and rush are the fall and winter holidays – Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Even before the back to school shopping is over, Stores urge us to buy now for the Christmas season. Halloween and Thanksgiving, especially, get shoe-horned in there somewhere. We get moved along at someone else’s schedule rather than following our own rhythms.
5 Practical Tips for Creating a Space Between Holidays
We can take a breath right now if we choose, too. I challenge you to relax a bit during November and not stress about Christmas. At least give yourself a few weeks to enjoy fall and your family. You do have time to do this.
Clear Away the Holiday Decor
A day or 2 after Halloween I put away the Halloween decorations. I start with the inside decorations to give myself a visual break from the spookiness. As I put decorations away, I declutter and check for broken decorations.
Do a Surface Cleaning
With everything put away, do a quick surface clean. I couldn’t believe how many cobwebs and dead bugs had accumulated in about 6 weeks time. To be honest, I wasn’t dusting but, that was too much. Don’t forget to wipe the finger prints off windows. Sparkly windows brighten a room.
Check Your Lighting Situation
Replace burnt out light bulbs to add some light back into your home. Assess the current lighting situation in your home. If you feel a room is too dark, maybe it’s time for a small lamp or recessed lights. My friend Darla of Heartwork Organizing has tips for a lighting update; she recently installed recessed lights in her living room in an old home.
Get Rid of Stuff
While you’re cleaning up, get rid of broken stuff if it’s not fixable. Donate items you don’t love anymore. Put away summer stuff, and other items not in their designated spots.
Between holidays is a good time to touch up paint and fix dings in walls. You may not think you see them, however, your brain registers the marks and dings creating an impression that your home isn’t looking its best.
