It’s Pear season; time for some pear recipes! I feel like pear is one of those under-appreciated fruits in the fall which is dominated by the apple.
Pears are so versatile – they can be eaten fresh, poached, grilled, baked, or sauteed. However, don’t freeze pears. Freezing a fresh pear breaks down the fibers in the fruit making them mushy. If you need to freeze fresh pears because they’re going bad, it’s best to turn them into a puree to use in baked goods.
Speaking of going bad, pears do brown quickly when cut. Brushing a 50/50 solution of water and lemon juice on the cut side of a pear slows down the browning process, though it does not stop it completely. Lightly poaching a cut up pear is one way to preserve the pear and prevent browning.
13 Amazing Pear Recipes for Fall
Here’s 13 Pear Recipes for all occasions for fall. If you need to ripen pears for these recipes, leave them at room temperature for a day or 2 on the counter. If you don’t have time to use ripe pears immediately, put them in the refrigerator to slow down the ripening process. Check the neck of the pear for ripeness since pears ripen from the inside out. Ripe pears give to gentle pressure in this area.
If your pears overripen, puree them in smoothies and sauces (see Little House Living’s Pear sauce recipe). Or, use them to replace sugar in baked goods or apples in sweet soups like my Butternut Squash Apple Soup. You can use pears in place of apples in my 9 Apple Recipes for fall.
