Easter wasn’t a big holiday for our family when I was growing up. I was baptized Catholic, but we never practiced. My sister and I got Easter baskets, and that was it. I think my mom baked ham.
Easter is a big holiday for my husband’s family – practicing Catholics. My mother-in-law, a former CCD director, did the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday with the Lord’s supper, followed by the Good Friday service, Holy Saturday vigil, and of course the celebratory mass on Easter Sunday. Her 6 kids wore new outfits for Easter and had pictures taken with the Easter bunny.
Being around my husband’s family for more than 20 years has influenced my choices at Easter. When the kids were younger, I made a bread crown of thorns and did the Holy Thursday supper. We’ve always brought palms home on Palm Sunday. For a few years, our parish blessed bread on Holy Saturday.

My husband’s family always gathers together to celebrate Easter on Easter. My mother-in-law fills Easter eggs for an Easter egg hunt for her grandchildren. When my sister-in-law Lisa hosted the Easter celebration, she always made ham and pineapple stuffing. To this day, I never turn down pineapple stuffing when it appears at a party.
