To help us save money in 2014, I am doing Menu Plan Monday again. Menu planning helps me save time and money in the kitchen thanks to using up what we buy and maximizing the time spent preparing food to feed my growing family of 5 kids.
Over the holidays, my husband who loves to cook picked up the menu planning job for me. My strength is quick easy weeknight meals, kitchen prep, and baking. His strength is fabulously meals that friends talk about 20 years later. Over time, he’s learned to balance creating a tasty meal with feeding 5 kids who all have their own food quirks, most of them easy to deal with.
In the past, I’ve done a 3 x 7 meal plan to plan breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This week, I’ll be sharing only our dinner plans. Next week, after a full week of school under my planning belt, I’ll be working on lunch plans. The following week, I’ll be adding in breakfast plans.
Monthly Produce and Meat Sales
A lot of our meals revolve around what’s on sale at the produce stand. This month broccoli and cabbage are on sale along with citrus fruits. If you can’t use up these vegetables in 2 weeks of meals, spend a little time, steaming and freezing the broccoli and cabbage for meals later in the month. 30 minutes is all you need to bank your produce savings.
