One of the ways we’ll be saving on organic fruit this year is by picking our own when possible. Fortunately there is at least one organic fruit farm in our area; I’m hoping to find at least one other. For apples, I think we’ll have to stick to locally grown ones.
If you’re interested in conventional fruit, Highland Orchards, just outside of West Chester, is a great place to go. Perfect for a morning trip, the people at Highland are laid-back and welcoming. We usually go for the apples or strawberries and bring a lunch to eat at the picnic benches next to the farm market’s parking lot. There’s a small petting zoo with facilities for washing hands after feeding the animals.
Linvilla Orchards in Delaware County is another good morning trip for conventional fruit. They also offer PYO strawberries and apples, along with other fruits and vegetables. This year they’re offering fall strawberry picking! Linvilla has a large play ground area and a large petting zoo. The playground area is enclosed. In the fall, they have a pumpkin festival during the month of October.
A small gem of Delaware County, Indian Orchards is located just a few miles from Linvilla. They grow fruits and vegetables sustainably or organically depending on the crop. I like to buy white peaches from Indian Orchards; they are incredibly sweet. I’ve also picked blueberries which was lots of fun. The blueberry bushes are covered with a large net to keep the birds out.
