Every few months, I make a batch of healthy snacks for the freezer in a somewhat futile attempt to stay ahead of 5 starving kids. As soon as I hear choruses of “There’s nothing to eat for a snack!”, I know it’s time to bake. As my kids get older, I get them more involved in making the snacks since they’re the chief beneficiary.
How to Get Healthy Snacks Made for the Freezer
I use 2 methods to get my healthy snacks made. If I have a busy week, I will spread the making and baking out over several days. I’ll make the dough or ask my 10 year old son to make the dough. The next day, I’ll bake the snacks and freeze them.
When I have time, I spend several hours making and baking the healthy snacks. Having the dough made ahead of time makes these bigger freezer cooking sessions go faster and more smoothly. I stick to easy recipes which require a few steps, one or two bowls, and don’t need to be rolled out. I have a one Tablespoon cookie scoop and a 3 Tablespoon cookie scoop for scooping cookie and muffin batter.
Packing the Cookies and Bars
I use our remaining plastic storage containers for the baked cookies and cookie dough. The square containers that hold about 3 cups are perfect for packing bar cookies since they’re modular. I use the wider, shorter plastic containers for the round cookies. I store cookie dough in 2 cup containers, enough to bake about 2 dozen cookies at a time.
