This Halloween cake is perfect for moms like me who want to make a homemade cake for a Halloween party but don’t feel too crafty. The hardest part of making this Graveyard cake is getting the half sheet cake out of the pan. The rest of the decorating can be done in less than 30 minutes.
Halloween Cake: Graveyard Cake
The hardest part of this cake is making the half sheet cake and removing it from the cake pan. When baking the cake, it is vital that the center bake fully. When I baked ours, I found the cake needed an extra 5 minutes of baking time, even though my cake tester came out clean when I checked the cake.
When using a half sheet pan, grease and flour the pan, and then cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the inside bottom of the pan. Place the parchment paper in the pan, and grease and flour it, too. This helps ensure the cake comes out of the half sheet pan completely.
For displaying the finished cake, I took a large Ikea tray and covered it with aluminum foil. Since the tray has a slight lip, I don’t worry about the cake sliding off as I move it, or crumbs falling off the tray onto the table.
How to Make a Graveyard Cake
Graveyard Cake Supplies
- 2 boxes of strawberry cake mix
- 3 containers of chocolate icing
- various candies – body parts, zombies
- white icing for drawing and outlining
- Half Sheet Cake Pan
Prepare the cake pan. Mix up the 2 boxes of cake batter according to directions, and pour into the prepared cake pan.
Bake the cake according to the package directions, adding an additional 5 minutes to make sure the middle of the cake is baked all the way through. Test the middle for doneness. If you suspect it isn’t finished, put the cake back in the oven for another 5 minutes.
Allow the cake to cool completely before removing from the pan and putting it on the display tray.
Do a thin crumb layer of icing to prevent the crumbs from getting into the top layer of icing. Place the wafer cookies on the crumb layer where you want the graves to be. Ice the cake completely.
Then add body parts and zombies in the appropriate spots. Draw a white line around the graves with white icing if you want to define them.
