garlic cheese biscuits, real food style

garlic cheese biscuitsFor our family birthday/graduation party on Saturday, I decided to try a new appetizer recipe from my book. Since we were having beef stroganoff for the main course, and veggies & dip and chips & dips for the appetizers, I wanted something that wasn’t spicey or heavy, and maybe a clean taste. These garlic cheese biscuits fit the bill, though I needed to change the ingredients a little to make them healthier.

Garlic Cheese Biscuits

Taste of Home: The New Potluck

Original List of Ingredients
2 cups all purpose flour
3 tsp. garlic powder, divided
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp chicken bouillon granules
1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup buttermilk
3 T. butter, melted

New List of Ingredients
2 cups white whole wheat flour
3 tsp. garlic powder
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup lard
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup buttermilk
thyme, paprika, black pepper, and dried parsley

Combine flour, garlic powder, baking soda, and baking powder in a bowl and cut in the lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in cheese. Add the buttermilk and stir until just moistened. I always check to make sure there’s no flour mixture at the bottom of the bowl before I move onto the next step.

Using a teaspoon or a cookie scoop, drop spoonfuls onto a greased cooking sheet, fitting about 12 to 16 per sheet. Bake at 450 for 14 minutes. The biscuits can be served warm or at room temperature. They also freeze well.

Note: Next time I may use 1/4 cup of lard and 1/4 cup of butter to add the butter flavor back into the recipe, though I like the lightness of the lard with the herb combination.

A weakness of mine has also been garlic. I’d be inclined to add even more possibly.

Oh, yes, me, too! I don’t think one ever has enough garlic. Ever!
