January with its clean slate after the holidays is a great time for thinking about balance in our lives as busy moms. Too often we put others needs before our own until our bodies and minds break down from the stress. By addressing the areas of organization and systems in our homes, finances, healthy habits, and creativity, we can begin to move our lives back to a healthier balance in our current season of life.
I’ve been there myself. After my last 2 kids, I went through 2 bouts of postpartum depression. At the time, I had no idea what I was going through. I was just so angry and tired all the time. I felt used up. I kept saying yes to things even though I didn’t want to do them, just to be nice.
Even after I recovered, I continued to get sick on a regular basis. I got every single bug the kids brought into our home. I was constantly tired. Nurturing 4 kids in 6 years with co-sleeping and breastfeeding depleted my body at a time when I needed the resources for myself.
Recovering took several years. Which is why I’m emphasizing this month’s series as a journey towards a healthier balance. I needed time to figure out what my body needed. I also needed time to figure out what I needed as a mom and a person. I took different combinations of vitamins until I found what I needed. I also made dietary changes like dropping wheat from my diet and reducing the amount of sugar I eat.
I also realized as a creative introvert that I needed time to write and take pictures. Writing and photography are how I express myself in the world. I still struggle with my need to for quiet time in a loud, chaotic household of 7 people. A walk can work wonders when I need a break.
