These essentials tools for Thanksgiving will help your Thanksgiving dinner run as smoothly as possible (and you’ll be prepared to host Christmas dinner, too). Since my husband loves to cook, we have all these items or something similar. Shop now for your needed items and save yourself the frantic shopping trip for a roasting pan big enough to hold the turkey the day before Thanksgiving.
1. Roasting Pan
If you plan on making gravy for Thanksgiving, a roasting pan with a rack is essential. The juices from the turkey can collect in the bottom of the pan while you’re roasting your turkey. Once the turkey is finished, you can take the rack with the turkey off and put it on a large platter, and then pour the juices for the gravy into a pan.
2. Potato Masher
There’s nothing like mashing potatoes the old fashioned way with a potato masher. Personally, I love mashed potatoes with lumps, though I’m in the minority in my family.
Weber Instant-Read Thermometer
Polder All-In-One Timer/Thermometer
To get your turkey to the perfect temperature, a thermometer is essential. Those pop-up thingies in your turkey – just ignore them.
My husband loves the Polder timer/ thermometer since he doesn’t have to open the oven and let out precious heat just to check the temperature of the turkey. You can set the alarm to go off when your turkey reaches the perfect temperature or by time if you prefer that measure. The alarm will go off loudly, very loudly, for 5 minutes.
Your lower-cost option is a thermometer like the Weber Instant-read Thermometer. It comes with a protective sleeve in case little fingers want to play with the sharp thermometer. When checking the temperature on your turkey, slide the thermometer into the little metal loop at the top of the protective case to keep your fingers from being burned.
If you’re like me, you can put something in the oven or on the stove, and walk away and forget about it. My husband is still teasing me about the corned beef I burned recently because I walked away and forgot to check the level of liquid in the pot every so often.
Anyway, I love this QuadTimer which I’ve been using for a year. You can track 4 different times, i.e. 4 different dishes on this one timer. Add in the timer on your stove, and you can track the time for 5 dishes, along with using the timer on the thermometer for your turkey.
I use my QuadTimer for multiple reasons. I have it set up right now for my blogging tasks. I’ve also used it to track time for my children when they use the computer during homework time.
Norpro Stainless Steel Baster
needle and brush
To keep your turkey moist, basting is essential. Thanks to your roasting pan, it’s easy to suck up the juices from the bottom of the pan and baste your tasty turkey. This Norpro baster comes with a brush for cleaning; I love that!
6. Carving Knife and Knife Sharpener
Wusthof Classic 8-Inch Carving Knife
Wusthof 3 Stage Electric Knife Sharpener
Imagine slicing through your turkey smoothly and cleanly, and laying those perfectly cut pieces on your serving platter? It can happen with the proper knife – a carving knife. Many years ago, my husband insisted on buying a set of Wusthof knives which include a carving knife. I balked at the price, but not anymore.
7. Serving Platter
This Corelle break- and chip-resistant serving platter is the perfect vehicle for bringing your turkey to your guests. No worries about the turkey sliding off the platter if you happen to trip over the dog!
8. Pie Plate
Anchor Hocking Deep Pie Baking Dish, 9.5-Inch
|Anchor Hocking Oven Basics Deep Pie Plate, 9.5-Inch, Set of 3|
Serve your wonderful pies in style with these beautiful fluted glass pie plates. You spend time making a beautiful and tasty pie; the pie plate should be just as nice as the pie.
9. Serving Utensils
When I was still new to entertaining, I only had a few serving utensils until someone brought a dish without extra utensils. Now I have 4 forks and about 7 spoons. I’d much rather have extra serving utensils in case I need them. Don’t forget your pie server, too!
10. Storage Containers
Anchor Hocking 16-Piece Storage Set with Red Plastic Lids
Pyrex Storage 10-Piece Set, Clear with Blue Lids
Finally, you need storage containers for your Thanksgiving leftovers. Over the past few years, I’ve been switching our food storage containers from plastic to glass. The glass ones freeze just as well as the plastic ones. You can often bake items or reheat them in the oven in a glass storage container which you can’t do with the plastic ones. You also can’t reheat food in the microwave in a plastic container because of the leaching into the food.
