My Story of Weight Gain and Weight Loss
When I was in high school, I was about 30 pounds overweight. I was unhappy; my parents’ marriage was in trouble. They separated in my Junior year of high school. After growing up in a close neighborhood, we moved out to the country when I was in fifth grade. I went from lots of kids my age on my street to NO ONE on my street, or even near by. I filled my bucket with food.
Then, I went off to college an hour away, though at the time it felt like a world away. I met new friends including a first boyfriend. I also lost weight and started running and bicycling. I made the decision on Thanksgiving Day of my freshman year of college to get healthy and lose weight.
Fortunately, I was smart about losing weight. I took supplements and ate a lot of healthy stuff from the salad bar. I didn’t try diet pills or any crazy diets. I’ve continued to eat healthy, take supplements, and exercise. When I struggled with post partum depression twice, I focused on figuring out what was missing from my nutrition in my somewhat un-informed way, and made the changes.
Where I am now with Healthy Weight/Living
At age 45, I know I look good for a mom who has given birth to 5 kids. Too many moms my age are dealing with diabetes and pre-insulin resistance. Up until this winter when I sprained my ankle, I was doing great with being healthy. However, losing the 8 lbs. I gained during the winter thanks to my injury and getting older is much harder this time around. My body is changing. I need to work harder on exercise and eating right.
I also have a goal of running a half marathon. Nutrition is vital to that goal. Getting back to my comfortable weight of 125 lbs. will help by reducing stress on my joints. I have a vision of being an active, healthy grandmother in my old age. Again, nutrition plays a role in that vision.
