I made this in our new Cuisinart ice cream maker that I was able to purchase for $35. This recipe doesn’t require any cooking and takes about five minutes to mix up. It makes approximately 1/2 quarts of ice cream.
2 cups heavy cream $1.25
1 cup skim milk $.22
3/4 cup sugar $.17
1 teaspoon imitation vanilla $.003
Total Cost: $1.64
The homemade version costs $1.09 quart while Breyers (our favorite and all natural) was just on sale for $1.71/quart.
My oldest son asked that I reduce the creaminess of the homemade ice cream which I could do by substituting one cup of skim milk for one cup of heavy cream. I thought that the vanilla flavor could be made a little stronger by using 1 1/2 teaspoons of extract. These changes would reduce the cost of the homemade ice cream to $1.24 for 1 1/2 quarts or $.83/quart.
