Hello. It’s Heather popping in from Real: The Kitchen and Beyond to share a quick and easy Valentine treat you can make with your kids. It’s cold outside and the kids and I are stuck inside this weekend. With too much time on the kids’ hands I needed to find something fun to keep them busy. Since we have Cheerios, marshmallows, chocolate chips, and sprinkles, I decided it was the perfect day to make the Valentine treats I have been thinking about. Added bonus? Maybe my son will stop bugging me about using the sprinkles for a few days.
If you are making treats for a Valentine’s Day party, these Cheerio treats are perfect because they are nut-free. If you need gluten-free treats, you can use Rice Krispies instead. Just make sure you add an extra cup of krispies. Here’s the recipe I used to for my base. They are super easy and not only tree nut free but also peanut free.
Easy Steps to Cheerio Treats
- Melt your first ingredients and mix the cereal in, per the recipe.
- Once this is done, dump the cereal mixture onto parchment or waxed paper.
- If using cookie cutters you will flatten the mixture out on parchment paper to about 1 inch thick. Let it set until cooled, then cut into shapes.
If you are shaping them by hand, you want to to leave the mixture in a ball, butter your hands, and start shaping quickly. I used 2 inch ball shaped pieces, shaping them into 6 hearts and 6 circles.
- Next, I had the kids dip the tops in chocolate and sprinkles. Mind you, sprinkles are the glitter of the baking industry. So, while it is a super easy treat for kids to help make it does get a bit messy. Don’t let that stop you. It’s worth a little sprinkle. Plus those Valentine’s Day sprinkles look so pretty.
I dare you not to eat one or two before…I mean after you are done.
