Part of being a parent is building memories for our kids especially during the holidays. Scents, textures, pictures – these all spark memories. I think holiday memories are the strongest because of the emotions and family stories tied into the memories.
My Holiday Memories
Looking back at my own holiday memories, I honestly don’t remember much. I know we must have baked because as an adult, it was a big deal to me to bake with my mom and sister during the holidays. I remember going to breakfast with Santa once, maybe at the local mall. I remember one Christmas our parents surprised us with toys on Christmas Eve; I can still feel the magic of that moment. There was a decoration sort of like a cuckoo clock that played a song, and a glass Christmas tree with little plastic lights which lit up when we turned it on.

My Children’s Holiday Memories
When my youngest son asked my mother-in-law if we could come to her house for lunch during Christmas break, I knew we had a memory in the making. In years past, we’ve done our Santa visit late morning on Christmas Eve and gone to my mother-in-law’s for lunch or met her at the mall for lunch. This year, we’re getting together the day after Christmas since my father-in-law is taking most of next week off.
One of my favorite memories from my children’s childhood is having a cookie baking day with my mom and sister every December 8th. As Catholic school students, my kids had no school on this Holy Day. My mom and I would make cookies in the kitchen while my sister helped/supervised the kids with decorating the cookies.
