I didn’t like smoothies. They just never tasted good. Smoothies are gloppy and have that protein powder taste. And besides–I like to chew my food, not drink it.
Then one day my life changed. I found a Ninja Professional Blender with single serve cups on clearance at Target. I had a blender thing that made really bad smoothies–so during the move . . . it lost a piece, and I ditched it. The kids had been begging me to make smoothies . . . I gave into the whining!
I unpacked the Ninja.
The best thing about this gadget were the individual cups. I loved that idea. Each kid could make whatever they wanted without getting a huge blender thing all dirty. Easy clean up! That excited me.
The kids have been experimenting with fruits, veggies and all kinds of milks and yogurts. It has been fun watching them develop new recipes and try one another’s culinary masterpieces.
The Baude Family Favorite 3-ingredient Smoothies
Mommies Good Morning Green Smoothie
1/2 of a banana
1/4 cup orange juice–I used Simply Orange/Banana
Fill the cup with greens. I started with spinach, then added swiss chard and finally added kale. Now I use a combination of whatever I have on hand.
1 cup of dark chocolate almond milk
1 banana (frozen ones work great)
Alla’s Dairy-free Strawberry Dream Smoothie
vanilla almond yougurt
Simple Substitutions for Smoothie Ingredients
If you don’t have these ingredients–please, don’t stress out! Just make a few simple changes.
- Strawberry subs = blueberry, raspberry, kiwi
- Banana subs= mango, papaya, leche, avocado.
- Coconut milk, almond milk, quinoa milk, yogurt, almond milk yogurt or coconut water are all good liquids to blend.
Surprise Smoothie – Use Up Leftover Fruit and Yogurt
I often have two pieces of watermelon left over or find a yogurt flavor that no one wants to eat. I use all these orphan food items and make a Surprise Smoothie! I have the kids taste test and see if they can express what their palate is telling them. As a homeschool mom this is a great way to incorporate a bunch of teaching into one activity.
