Getting kids back to their school routine is one of the hardest things for kids to do if they’ve been getting up later in summer. My kids usually get up around 6 o’clock on school days. In the summer, some of them have been getting up later like 7:30, 8 o’clock. Fortunately, we still send them to bed at 9 pm, the same bedtime they have during the school year.
Move Wake Up Time Back 15 Minutes Each Week
For the month of August, I start gradually moving their wake up time back 15 minutes each week. By the time September rolls around my kids are ready for the 6:00/6:30 am wake up time. I know 6 o’clock is really early if the kids have to be at school by 8:20. However my kids love to get up early, and often race each other to be the first one downstairs for breakfast. Once they’ve gotten through their morning routine and chores, they have electronic time – computer or DS for 20 minutes. We rotate through who gets to use the computer since there’s only one.
Starting the first week of August, I make sure everybody is up by 7 o’clock. During the second week, I move back the wake up time 15 minutes to 6:45 am. During the third week, it’s 6:15 am, and then the last week of August everyone needs to be up by 6 o’clock. By the time school starts the Wednesday after Labor Day , my kids are ready for the new routine.
Encourage Self-Sufficiency in the Kitchen
While we work towards the 6 o’clock wake up time, I continue to teach the older ones to make their own breakfasts. They usually do during the summer since I encourage the kids to be self-sufficient. During the school year, my husband likes to jump in and make breakfast. However, he doesn’t have time every morning to make breakfast.
I shared some tips on the AboutOne blog about simplifying the school morning routine to reduce stress for everyone. My friend Mitzi of Written Reality has 5 tips to get your kids motivated in the morning, including no electronic time, something I debate a lot during the school year.
