Looking for some one-day trips in the Philadelphia area and nearby New Jersey and Delaware? You’ve come to the right place! I’ve rounded up a ton of trip ideas from my Philly Social Media moms, complete with their best advice for each travel spot.
Come back on Wednesday for 5 more day trip ideas and tips.
On Saturday, which turned out to be a glorious day weather-wise — sunny and high of 82 degrees, we took a drive out to Reading and visited Hawk Mountain, a bird sanctuary for hawks and eagles in particular.
Despite the vengeful mosquitos and the cantankerous child (and the fact that there was no beach), it was actually quite fascinating. We made it there in time to enjoy the Raptors Up Close! event in the outdoor amphitheater, where we got to see a live hawk and owl up close and personal. ~ Jo-Lynne
It’s an odd thing, living in a historic area such as Philadelphia. You tend to forget that people travel across the country to see places in your own backyard. When we travel, we take tours and see the sites, but we tend to neglect our hometown.
I’ve seen the historic sites in Philly several times with visiting friends and family, and my husband grew up here so he’s been at various times throughout his life, but we had never taken our kids until last week.
We decided that it was high time, so my husband took a day off from work to take our family downtown. I wish we’d stayed overnight because there was too much to do to fit it into a day trip. We hope to go back later this summer for Part Two! ~Jo-Lynne
Taking weekend family trips are not a regular occurrence for us. It’s a lot of work, and let’s face it, it ain’t cheap either. But I’ve found that making the effort to get away with our family is really important for building relationships and making memories.
Our lengthy vacations are often spent with extended family (which is great for other reasons) and at home we are usually running in two or three different directions. My husband and I make time for date nights, but we sometimes forget to make time for our family unit, but I’m always glad when we do.
I treasure these memories, and I hope our kids will too. ~ Jo-Lynne
Ocean City New Jersey – Mommy Entourage
My kids favorite place of all time in Ocean City is Gillians Wonderland Pier, located at 6th Street and the Boardwalk. I remember going to the Pier myself as a kid, so I always get a little nostalgic when I see my kids riding the same carousel I was on as a tike.
The second attraction that I absolutely loved was the Dolphin Watching Adventure through Atlantic City Cruises. Only about a half an hour to forty minutes from Ocean City, Atlantic City Cruises offers several cruise options in the morning, afternoon, for happy hour, private parties, and the dolphin watching excursion. Located in the marina surrounded by several restaurants and shops, it’s a fun outing that brings out your adventurous side! ~ Jeanine
Avalon’s Golden Inn is the Perfect Place for a Girl’s Getaway – Mommy Entourage
Avalon is a beautiful gem on the coast of the Jersey Shore. Filled with a variety of restaurants and charming shops, there is always something to do. Avalon doesn’t seem to have the congestion a lot of other beaches have and is definitely not MTV’s Jersey Shore. You can have fun in Avalon without having to run into a town full of Snooki wannabes. The beaches are beautiful, the people are friendly, and the town is fun! ~ Jeanine
