For moms, the most wonderful time of year is often the most stressful time of year. We get slammed with organizing all the details of creating wonderful Christmas memories for our families.
Yet, we neglect to take care of ourselves inside and out. We neglect those necessary healthy habits like sleeping 8 hours a day, exercising, and eating a healthy diet. We also neglect to put on our “faces” and dress to look our best. A simple, effortless beauty routine can help us greet the holidays with a smile and make the most of our family celebrations.
As a mom of 5 who writes a blog and volunteers at her children’s school, the holidays can be an overwhelming time for me. There’s all the shopping still to be done, the gifts to be ordered, the cards to be ordered, addressed, and mailed, the gifts for the teachers and others, the decorating, the baking, the events, and of course, the holiday celebrations at school. I’m exhausted just writing that list.
How to Get Through the Holidays with a Smile
It’s okay if we don’t get it all done. The mailman won’t stop delivering mail just because I forgot to leave a small gift for him. My daughter’s teacher will be quite happy with a hug and a thank you, or a simple card if we have time.
Instead of decorating my entire home, I could decorate one or two rooms on the first floor. Yes, I’d love to have some Martha moments in my children’s bedroom, and it’s okay if it doesn’t happen this year. Fewer decorations put out means fewer decorations to put away at the end of the season, and more time to enjoy Christmas activities like making gingerbread houses.
Making a list and reviewing it with your husband will help you decide what gets done this year. Just grab a piece of paper and make a list of what you think needs to get done. Sit down with your husband and talk about the list. Prioritize using 1, 2, and 3. Once you prioritize the list, spend 5 minutes assigning tasks to family members.
2. Say no unless you absolutely must say yes.
I think this is one of the hardest lessons for moms to learn. It’s one I’ve had a lot of experience with recently. Someone once said to me that when you say yes to something, you’re saying no to something else. Why not start with the no’s unless you know you must do whatever is asked of you. Saying no creates wide margins in your holiday season and gives you time to truly enjoy each moment with your family.
If you struggle with saying no, buy yourself time with a very easy line: “Let me check with my husband.” When you’re ready to respond, text or email your response. If you start a conversation with the person, you can get yourself pulled back into saying yes. Using texting and email prevents the other person from persuading you to change your mind.
If you’re having a party, ask people to bring a dish or dessert. If you have kids, get them involved with sending out the family Christmas cards. A seven year old can handle putting address labels, return address labels, and stamps on envelopes if you break the process down. Instead of wrapping every single gift, ask your spouse to wrap the presents for their extended family.
4. Aim for good enough.
If you want to be like me and use those photo holder cards that are 10 for $1 from Michael’s Craft store rather than ordering a fabulous Christmas card at the last minute, I give you permission. Make it easy to accomplish the details of your holiday.
5. Define your fundamental beauty routine.
Get enough sleep each night; take vitamins daily; limit your sugar consumption; drink lots of water; and wash your hands as much as possible. A healthy holiday season is a happy holiday season leading to a fantastic start for the New Year.
